Ask Dr. Carolle

QuestionI would like to know when I should stop using contraception. I am 49 years old and my periods are now coming every three months. Is there still a chance to get pregnant at my age?

AnswerYes Ma'am! If women are fertile, they can still become pregnant until they reach menopause. Older women have a high percentage of unintended pregnancies and subsequent abortions. If you are perimenopausal and sexually active, you will need to use some type of birth control to avoid unwanted pregnancy until you have had no periods for 12 consecutive months.
