If women are fertile, they can still become pregnant until they reach menopause. Older women have a high percentage of unintended pregnancies and subsequent abortions. If you are perimenopausal and sexually active, you will need to use some type of birth control to avoid unwanted pregnancy until you have had no periods for 12 consecutive months.
